Gibellina, in the heart of Western Sicily, was transformed by the 1968 earthquake which devastated the Belìce Valley. This event marked a clear "before" and "after" in the history of the city.
Faced with the failed project and the continuing delays in the reconstruction led by the institutions, Ludovico Corrao, who became mayor in 1969, together with well-known artists and intellectuals such as Leonardo Sciascia and Renato Guttuso, launched an appeal for solidarity, calling on the ruins of Gibellina, in night of January 15, 1970, some of the most important Italian writers, artists and intellectuals, including Cesare Zavattini, Carlo Levi, Damiamo Damiani, Corrado Cagli, Bruno Caruso, Gianbecchina, Sergio Zavoli and Ernesto Treccani. This event symbolized the pain and the rebirth of the city.
Since that moment, Gibellina has been renewed, becoming an "En Plein Air" Museum thanks to the generous gift of works by artists including Pietro Consagra, Ludovico Quaroni, Mimmo Paladino, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Mario Schifano, Carla Accardi, Andrea Cascella, Giulio Turcato , Fausto Melotti, Francesco Venezia, Franco Purini, Alberto Burri and many others, becoming one of the most significant cultural experiences of the second half of the 20th century in Europe.
Gibellina today represents a unique anthropological and artistic laboratory, a symbol of rebirth through art and beauty.
